Nintendo's Joy-Con controllers for the Switch console introduced a modular approach to gaming input that sparked intense debate about the trade-offs between versatility and traditional controller design when the system launched in 2017. The Joy-Con's ability to function as individual controllers, combine into a traditional gamepad, or operate as motion-sensing devices represented an ambitious attempt to create a universal gaming input solution, but many players initially questioned whether this flexibility came at the cost of comfort and functionality. Critics pointed to the Joy-Con's small size when used individually, arguing that the controllers were too cramped for extended gaming sessions and lacked the ergonomic design of traditional controllers. The analog sticks, positioned asymmetrically on each Joy-Con, felt awkward to many players who were accustomed to the symmetrical or offset stick arrangements found on other controllers. The Joy-Con's button layout, with its small face buttons and shoulder triggers, was criticized for feeling less substantial than traditional controller inputs. However, the Joy-Con's modular design enabled gaming experiences that were impossible with conventional controllers, from the cooperative gameplay of Snipperclips to the motion-controlled adventures of Super Mario Odyssey. The controllers' HD Rumble technology provided incredibly precise haptic feedback that could simulate everything from ice cubes clinking in a glass to the feeling of marbles rolling around inside the controller. Despite ongoing issues with analog stick drift that have plagued the Joy-Con throughout its lifespan, the modular controller concept has influenced other manufacturers to explore similar approaches to flexible gaming input.
